Institute of Science and Religion (ISR)

ISR is an interdisciplinary entity of scientists and philosophers and theologians, based in Little Flower Seminary, Aluva, committed to the cause of the constructive dialogue between science and religion. . It functions under the Institute of Philosophy and Religion with a special thrust in the area of Science and Religion. ISR is a registered educational and charitable society. Non-sectarian and multi religious in its approach, ISR stands for a value-based integration of the religious, philosophical, ethical and social implication of the revolutionary developments in modern science into the diverse strata of human life, both at the academic and popular levels. The activities of ISR include:

  • Publication of original research in science and religion, philosophy of science, etc. in English as well as Malayalam.
  • Publication of an Indian journal of science and religion.
  • Popularization of the Science-Religion dialogue through seminars, colloquium, discussion forums, essay competitions, etc.
  • Providing faculty and pedagogical resources on philosophy of science and religion to various centers of learning.
  • Collaboration with scientists, philosophers and theologians who share a commonality of vision.

9.1 The Thrust of ISR

ISR engages itself in value-based commited and disciplined researches in the arena of science-religion interface. For an integral and comprehensive approach to the objectives of the institute, we seriously consider and uphold our rootedness in the Indian culture and spirituality coupled with its pluri-religious dimension. Indian orientation is very much characteristic to our commitment and it is a unique dimension of ISR.

9.2 ISR Faculty and Resource Persons

The faculty of ISR is constituted by the committed talents of Prof. Job Kozhamthadam, M.Sc., Ph.D., the former Member of the Indian National Commission for the History of Science; Prof. K. Babu Joseph, M.Sc., Ph.D., Former Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology; K.S. Radhakrishnan, M.A., Ph.D.; C.S. Paulose, M.Sc., Ph.D., Dr. C.S. Head of the Department of Biotechnology and the Director for Neuroscience in Cochin University of Science and Technology; Prof.T.V. Antony, M.Sc., Ph.D., former professor of Biochemistry at St.Joseph’s College, Trichy; P. Basak, M.Tech., Ph.D., Engg, Ford Foundation Fellow, USA and National Award winner from the President of India; and Augustine Pamplany, M.Sc., Ph.D., Founder Director of ISR.

9.3 ISR Library

ISR has a collection of over 1000 volumes exclusively on divergent fields like Science and Religion, Philosophy of Science, Neuroscience, Biotechnology and Bioethics, Artificial intelligence, Nanotechnology, etc. It is one of the best libraries on science and religion in India. It provides the scope for extensive research in this field for scholars and students.

9.4 ISR Publications

Omega- is the official magazine of Little Flower Seminary, Institute of Philosophy and Religion and It is actualized through ISR. Omega: Indian Journal of Science and Religion was materialized on December 15, 2002 and is the first of its kind in India. Omega covers a wide range of themes in: Modern Physics, Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Bio-Technology and Bio-ethics, Neuroscience and Neurotheology, Cosmology, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Logic and Mathematics, History and Philosophy of Science, Indian Philosophy and Indian Science etc. Every year ISR publishes at least one book on science and religion in English or in our Local dialect.

9.5 Seminars and Workshops

Every year ISR organizes a number of national conferences, regional workshops and other institution based seminars. It is a pleasure to learn the positive momentum generated by this seminar across the state. As a unique mission to the academic commitment the educational and charitable society of ISR renders seminars, conferences and workshops free of charge.
